Another tale of terrain.

Early Germans invaded Han China in 180AD, and the Germans placed an unnavigable river.

The Han had a marsh, two gentle hills, a road and a BUA. The marsh came on fine blocking one flank, the hills not so well, ending up in opposite corners, but the road came straight across the Chinese back line. This left the BUA and I've never seen Bob deliberate so much on where to put it. In the end, it went on the right side of the Han deployment area. As Bob said: "Interesting terrain." Here it is. Note we were playing NZ-sized table, so the outside roads and sea just mark the limits of the playing area. River in white.

Bob had been expecting Early Imperial Romans, so the Barbarian horde was of some concern. Anthony was expecting War Wagons as Bob had selected 180AD.

Bob's plan was to put Bw well behind the river, Bd sweep around the BUA and roll up the German line with a flank march coming on the bottom. Anthony's plan had been to have two Wb commands storm across the river and have Cv and Ps come around the top, but the BUA changed all that. First, there was only enough space for one Wb command to fit between BUA and marsh. Second, there was a wide opne flank for WWg to come in on. Solution: deploy Cv/Ps inside the river and send one Wb command on a counter flank march. Thus, this is what deployment looked like.

BTW, Germans deployed first and declined to move first bound.

Han sent Lh up the road and the Germans responded by starting to move their Cv across, but really both sides were waiting for a flank march to arrive.

Bob rolled a 6 first - Han had 25 elements in their command but the Batavians had 44, so any WWg were toast.

Oops, Han sent CV up the road, LH got there later, as we are about to see.

I think Bob was a bit surprised that Anthony would send a flank march to come on in a marsh, but now he had to bring his command with that same marsh blocking his entry. Had we been using a normal-sized table, there would have been more open space. As it was, the Cv general led Lh on along the road while there was just enough space for Bw to come on on the German side of the river.

The rest (12 Hd) didn't have the space and PIPs to come on.

Two Batavian Ps got in the way of some Bw to stop them fleeing far so that following Cv could hack them in the back. Batavian WbF came doen the road and Ps came through the marsh.

Also not e the central Batavian Wb command storming forward at the same time.

It's a road turned upside down. Does make things clear when it's white. Maybe give it a bit of blue Bob? (Although I'd worry that paint would make it warp.)

Frozen river of ensparklement then 55

Bw shot off nearly the entire front rank of WbF, but did diddly squat to the WbS behind, which went in and all but wiped out the Bw. Had two Bw not survived, the game would have been over. As it was, they hung on giving BdF a chance to get into the flank of the Wb. The former flank marching command didn't survive long.

The central Batavian command went down, but with the flank marchers only needing to kill 2 disheartened and surrounded Ax in the marsh (and it being after 11 pm), Bob settled for 6 points as it could have been 0-25. So, 19-6 to Anthony all because of that BUA...

Running totals after five rounds: Bob 63, Anthony 62. Bob one win and two draws with the upper hand, Anthony two wins.

I have come to realise over the past two games just how critical terrain can be - placement has added more than just interest.
Enter

Phillip

It definitely makes or breaks games, especially for irregular armies

Sometimes battle plans pretty much write themselves. This game had me scratching my head a lot at the beginning, before I eventually elected to do the wrong thing

Had been expecting to fight EIR, so if I'd picked a sensible Han army with BdO, AxS and CvO it would have been rather similar. So tried the rebel horde version with 20 HdS with most of them expecting to come on as a flank march.

But never even got them out of the tin. 12 were lost in pushed back flank march, and 8 spent the game in ambush very far from the action
😆
